Cox Charities Invests $35K in Local Nonprofits: Building a Stronger Community

Cox Charities grants recipients holding checks.

Cox Charities Paves the Way for Local Change

Cox Communications has made a significant contribution to the community by awarding $35,000 in grants to seven local nonprofit organizations. This initiative, part of the Cox Charities Investments Grants program, serves as a beacon for community empowerment by directing funds to programs that directly benefit residents. Each nonprofit received up to $5,000, showcasing the commitment of Cox employees to foster positive change in their communities.

Celebrating Local Nonprofit Initiatives

The recipients of this year’s grants represent a diverse range of programs aimed at uplifting local youth and supporting educational initiatives. Key projects funded include:

  • A Vessel of Hope Corporation: Their “Civics in Action” program empowers youth ages 15–24 through interactive learning about voting rights and civic engagement, building a generation of informed voters.
  • Cade Creativity Labs/Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention: This program promotes STEAM education, engaging around 50,000 guests with hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity and innovation.
  • Forage Inc/Working Food: Their Young Stewards program educates marginalized youth in environmental and culinary skills, promoting sustainability and healthy eating.
  • Public Education Foundation of Marion County: By providing essential classroom supplies, this initiative supports over 1,200 teachers and enhances the learning experience for students.
  • Star Center Theatre, Inc.: This program creatively merges drama and music with literacy, reaching over 800 audience members and engaging students in active learning.
  • Strong-MINDed Mentoring, Inc.: Focused on at-risk young men, this initiative offers life skills training and job readiness workshops, aiming to empower participants through consistent mentorship.
  • University of Florida: Their Roaring Riptide initiative develops assistive technology devices, making STEM education accessible for individuals with disabilities.

Empowering the Next Generation

The grants will not only fund exciting projects but also enrich the community by providing youth with the necessary tools to thrive. Initiatives like the “Civics in Action” program develop essential civic skills, while the Cade Museum’s STEAM experiences contribute to fostering innovation among the youth. As Brad Gamble, CEO of the Cade Museum, emphasized, partnerships such as this are vital for providing hands-on learning opportunities that inspire future leaders.

The Spirit of Giving

Cox Charities is a unique initiative as it is entirely funded by contributions from Cox employees and their business partners. This employee-driven model reflects a profound commitment to community engagement and support. Aimee Pfannenstiel, Cox's Central Florida market vice president, stated, "Supporting our community isn’t just part of our job, it’s who we are at Cox." This sentiment encapsulates the essence of corporate social responsibility, highlighting how businesses can play a pivotal role in shaping vibrant communities.

The Bigger Picture

Across the East Region, Cox Charities allocated a total of $315,000 to 63 grant recipients this year, further emphasizing the importance of community investment. By focusing on programs that foster youth innovation, promote conservation, and ensure equal opportunity, Cox is on a mission to transform lives.

The essence of these grants goes beyond financial support; it’s about creating a tapestry of community involvement, where local organizations can make significant impacts with the help of corporate partners. Such collaborative endeavors not only address immediate needs but also stimulate long-term progress.

As we recognize these local heroes, it is vital for community members to remain engaged, support these initiatives, and consider how we can all contribute to a thriving community. Join in the movement to uplift our local organizations!
