National Grid's ONE: A Beacon for Diversity
In a notable recognition of progress and commitment to diversity, National Grid's employee resource group (ERG) ONE has been honored as the Top Network Group at the 2020 Ethnicity Awards. This prestigious award highlights organizations dedicated to ensuring equal opportunities for all, irrespective of race or ethnicity. Celebrated in a virtual ceremony earlier this month, this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the members of ONE who strive to support ethnic minorities within the workplace.
Fostering Inclusion Through Action
The efforts of the ONE group go beyond mere advocacy; they embody actionable change. With initiatives that include mandatory training on unconscious bias and hosting events around significant cultural observances like Black History Month and Diwali, ONE showcases its commitment to not just discussing diversity and inclusion but actively promoting them. Latisha McKenzie, co-chair of ONE, reflects on this achievement, expressing gratitude toward her colleagues who have taken voluntary roles to drive meaningful conversations and support within the community.
The Power of Community Connection
As we look at the role of ERGs like ONE, it's clear they play a crucial part in engaging with diverse communities. Their outreach programs, such as Your Future, Your Ambition (YFYA) and STEM workshops, not only connect with young people from varied backgrounds but also cultivate a pipeline of talent that directly impacts the future workforce. McKenzie acknowledges the collective effort in making strides toward a more inclusive workplace, stating, “The hard work is by no means complete, but we remain focused on action that will help achieve meaningful change.”
Adapting to Challenges During the Pandemic
In a year where teams faced unprecedented challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ONE not only adapted but thrived, growing its membership to over 500. Emphasizing resilience and solidarity, they leveraged technology to connect with their U.S. counterparts, fostering unity despite physical distance. Amardeep Malhi, also co-chair of ONE, celebrated this recognition amidst the backdrop of ongoing uncertainty, citing it as a signal of hope and commitment to ensuring diversity and ethnicity in employee roles.
National Grid's Continued Commitment to Diversity
National Grid’s commitment to cultural diversity doesn’t stop at ONE; the organization has been recognized among the top ten Outstanding Employers as well. Lisa Waterhouse, UK Diversity and Inclusion Manager, reiterates the importance of cultivating a culture that celebrates differences across all facets of identity. “The work all the ERGs do really does support this ambition,” she notes, emphasizing that the diversity efforts strengthen the overall workforce and enhance productivity.
Looking Toward the Future
The honor bestowed upon ONE at the Ethnicity Awards serves as an inspiration for other organizations striving to enhance their diversity initiatives. As communities come together, the collective push for inclusive environments can point toward a brighter, more equitable workplace for all.
