Celebrating Native American Heritage: McKesson's UNITY ERG

In recent years, the observance of Native American Heritage Month has evolved into a significant platform for celebrating the rich cultural tapestry, contributions, and history of Native Americans. Last year, McKesson took a meaningful step forward by launching the UNITY Employee Resource Group (ERG), which now boasts a membership of over 500 individuals passionate about honoring their Native and Indigenous heritage.

A Personal Journey in Leadership

Among the shining stars of UNITY are Sharon Longwell and her daughter Laura Longwell. Sharon, a Vice President at McKesson, has dedicated over 35 years to the company, cultivating connections that transcend professional obligations. Having deep roots in the Great Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, her passion for her heritage runs strong. “I am passionate to ensure my children appreciate their heritage: the relatives who paved roads and opportunities for them,” says Sharon. This commitment inspired her daughter Laura to co-found the UNITY ERG, bridging personal and professional aspirations.

Building Community and Empowerment

Sharon and Laura's involvement in UNITY serves as a testament to the power of community. The group not only celebrates Native traditions but also educates and empowers members to thrive both personally and professionally. With stories from members like the granddaughter of a WWII Navajo Code Talker, UNITY creates a space where distinct experiences and rich backgrounds fuel collaborative growth.

The Role of ERGs in Shaping Company Culture

Sharon believes that ERGs are vital to McKesson's strategy for fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce. She points out, “You cannot shine if you are trying to hide or cover up part of what makes you great.” By enabling employees to celebrate their whole selves, McKesson nurtures an environment where individuals can flourish while supporting one another. ERGs like UNITY have proven to be a yield of innovation, collaboration, and strong community bonds within the corporate fabric.

Unity Through Identity: The Path Ahead

As UNITY continues to expand, it will certainly lay down new pathways for engagement and growth. The lessons learned and connections made within this collective will foster ongoing initiatives that reflect the true essence of Native and Indigenous culture. In creating these spaces, McKesson builds a foundation for innovation while allowing every employee's light to shine bright.

Closing Thoughts

As we move forward, let us remember the importance of recognizing and amplifying the voices of diverse communities within our organizations. Embracing heritage not only enriches our environments but also lays the groundwork for a stronger, more united future.
