Argonne National Laboratory: A Trailblazer in Disability Inclusion Recognition

Thanks to efforts by ABLED employee resource group, Argonne is first national lab to be named a “best place to work for disability inclusion"

Argonne National Laboratory Breaks New Ground in Disability Inclusion

In a remarkable achievement, Argonne National Laboratory has become the first national lab recognized as a “best place to work for disability inclusion” by Disability:IN, a leading national advocate for people with disabilities. This honor, announced on July 15, 2020, is a testament to the dedicated efforts of Argonne’s ABLED employee resource group, which played a pivotal role in the application process.

Understanding the Disability Equality Index

Central to Argonne’s recognition is the Disability Equality Index (DEI) survey, a benchmarking tool developed through a partnership with the American Association of People with Disabilities. This comprehensive survey measures various aspects of an organization’s inclusivity, from leadership commitment to accommodations and community engagement. Argonne completed its inaugural DEI survey, surpassing the scoring threshold to earn this prestigious designation.

Leadership Insights on Inclusion

Jim Bluemond, chairperson of ABLED, expressed his pride in Argonne’s achievement but emphasized the continuous journey ahead: “We are proud to be the first national lab to get this designation. Argonne is doing great things in this area, but there are things we can improve upon, and we will continue to pursue those.” This sentiment reflects a growth mindset shared by many organizations engaged in enhancing workplace diversity and inclusion.

Support Initiatives Making a Difference

Since its establishment in 2018, ABLED has extended its reach by forming two additional support groups focused on cancer—supporting patients and caregivers—and on assisting employees parenting children on the autism spectrum. These services highlighted Argonne’s commitment not only to employees with disabilities but to the entire community, providing resources and a sense of belonging.

Argonne's Recognition as a Model for Others

Argonne’s journey offers valuable insights into the broader conversation around disability inclusion. By taking active steps to evaluate and improve their practices, Argonne sets an inspiring example for organizations across various sectors. As workplaces strive for greater inclusivity, the model established by Argonne can serve as a blueprint for others looking to embrace diversity.

Future Optimism and Commitment

Looking ahead, Argonne intends to build upon its current achievements, aligning continuous improvement with its strategic goals. A culture that embraces inclusivity not only benefits employees but enriches the organization as a whole, fostering innovation and collaboration.

Why This Matters to Everyone

Inclusion in the workplace is not just about being compliant; it’s about creating an environment where all individuals can thrive. As society confronts ongoing challenges, the acknowledgment and support of diverse backgrounds enhance problem-solving capacities and contribute to the overall health of the organization. Getting involved in disability advocacy or simply supporting inclusive initiatives can lead to meaningful change.

This heartwarming journey of Argonne National Laboratory vividly exemplifies what can be achieved through dedication to inclusivity and community support. By actively working together, we can create spaces where everyone has an opportunity to succeed.
